TYPES OF BREAST SURGERY
Breast surgery includes three main procedures: breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast explantation. Breast augmentation involves inserting implants to increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts. Breast reduction reduces the size of excessively large breasts to alleviate physical discomfort and enhance body proportion. Breast explantation involves removing previously placed implants, whether for personal, medical, or aesthetic reasons, restoring the breasts to their natural shape.
Breast augmentation is a procedure that increases breast volume, often resulting in a noticeable improvement in the cleavage and overall appearance of the breasts. To achieve this, cohesive silicone gel implants are used. There are various brands available in the market. Breast reduction surgery refers to the procedure performed by plastic surgeons to reduce the size of a patient’s breasts. This surgery is typically sought by patients who want a smaller, better-positioned bust or who experience symptoms such as back pain, infections in the breast folds, and deep shoulder grooves caused by the weight of the breasts on the bra.
Breast explantation refers to the procedure performed by plastic surgeons to remove breast implants and reconstruct the breast using the remaining tissue. There are various reasons why a patient with breast implants may wish to have them removed. The most common reasons include: the ASIA syndrome, where an immune reaction to a foreign body (in this case, a breast implant) leads to specific signs and symptoms that can cause physical and psychological discomfort; repeated capsular contractures, which might lead a patient to seek explantation; or in more extreme cases, conditions such as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, which necessitate the removal of implants. We must also consider the personal wishes of each patient; in some cases, the patient simply decides to remove their breast implants based on personal choice.
